The Shell

The Shell is a feasibility study for medium density housing and a kindergarten on a gritty urban site. The Shell has a tough exterior contrasted with a soft interior courtyard garden. The circulation is expressed rather than embedded into the building providing passive surveillance and incidental communal space. Angled timber planters and balcony dividers are used to direct northern sunlight into the apartments and provide internal privacy.

The internal garden is north facing and provides an area of respite from the surrounding busy roads. The development has floor-to-ceiling glazing facing the garden, while the exterior 'shell' facing the road is masonry with reduced punched openings. Verdant entry points are created around groups of mature scented eucalypts.
